Hope, Health, and Healing: Our Impact in NWUT USIONG ITAM

At Atim Ekanem Foundation, we believe that healthcare should never be a privilege—it should be a right. Too many people suffer in silence from preventable diseases, simply because they lack access to basic medical care. That’s why we do what we do.

Recently, we took our mission to NWUT USIONG ITAM, Itu LGA, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and what we experienced was both heartwarming and eye-opening.

Walking into NWUT USIONG ITAM, we were met with warm smiles, eager faces, and people hoping for answers—answers about their health, their future, and what they could do to live better. Some came because they felt fine but wanted to be sure, while others had lingering health concerns they had ignored for too long.

The reality is, kidney disease is a silent killer. By the time symptoms appear, the damage is often severe. Without early detection and treatment, many people face life-altering consequences, including kidney failure.

That’s why this outreach matters. That’s why we showed up.

Throughout the day, we provided:

  • Free Blood Pressure & Sugar Tests – Hypertension and diabetes are two of the biggest causes of kidney disease. Many people had never checked theirs before.
  • Kidney Health Education – We talked to them about drinking more water, eating healthy, and how simple lifestyle changes can protect their kidneys.
  • Hydration Awareness & Food Distribution – Beyond educating the community on the importance of staying hydrated for kidney health, we also provided essential foodstuffs at the end of the medical outreach, ensuring families had both the knowledge and the resources to maintain a healthier lifestyle.
  • Community Counseling & Support – Because beyond medical check-ups, people need guidance, encouragement, and a plan for their well-being.

But one moment stood out the most.

As we screened the community members, we identified four individuals who needed urgent kidney function tests. Their results raised concerns—signs of potential kidney disease that needed immediate attention.

For these four individuals, this outreach may have been the difference between catching a problem early or facing something far more severe down the road. They now have a fighting chance.

Imagine if we hadn’t been there.

Moments like these remind us why we cannot stop. There are so many more people who need help, who need a second chance at good health, and who need someone to care enough to step in before it’s too late.

With World Kidney Day approaching, we are asking for your support. Every donation helps us reach more communities, provide more screenings, and help more people before it’s too late.

  • Donate – Help us fund kidney function tests and treatment for those in need.
  • Volunteer – Join us in making a real impact.
  • Share this message – You never know who might need it.
  • Together, we can save more lives. Let’s make kidney health a priority—for ourselves, for our loved ones, and for the communities that need it most.

Will you stand with us? Donate, volunteer, and be part of the change.
