Spreading Kidney Health Awareness in Nung Ukim Ikono, Akwa Ibom

At Atim Ekanem Foundation, we are committed to saving lives through kidney health awareness and education. Many communities in Nigeria lack access to vital health information, which puts them at risk for preventable diseases like chronic kidney disease (CKD).

In line with our mission, our team of dedicated volunteers and healthcare advocates recently visited Nung Ukim Ikono in Ikot Udom, Akwa Ibom State, for a life-changing health outreach program. The experience was both insightful and impactful, as we engaged with residents, provided health screenings, and distributed essential food supplies to support the community.

Raising Awareness on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

One of the most alarming discoveries during our outreach was that many people in the community had never heard of CKD and were unaware of its causes, symptoms, and prevention methods. CKD is a silent disease that often goes unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage, leading to complications such as kidney failure, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Our team took the time to educate over 80 individuals on the following key topics:
✅ The role of the kidneys in the body and why they are essential for overall health
✅ The causes of kidney disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and excessive use of painkillers
✅ Signs and symptoms of CKD, such as swelling, fatigue, and changes in urination
✅ How to prevent kidney disease through hydration, healthy eating, and lifestyle changes

The level of engagement was overwhelmingly positive, with many residents eager to learn more and ask questions about how they could protect themselves and their families from kidney disease.

Providing Free Health Screenings for Early Detection

Education alone is not enough—we believe in taking action. That’s why we offered free health screenings to 75 individuals, allowing them to assess their kidney health and identify potential risks early.

During the screening, we conducted:
🔬 Urine tests to detect kidney-related issues and early signs of disease
🩸 Blood sugar tests to assess the risk of diabetes, a major cause of CKD
💓 Blood pressure checks to identify hypertension, another leading cause of kidney disease

These tests provided valuable insights into the health conditions of community members, some of whom were advised to seek further medical attention for high-risk factors.

One of the highlights of the outreach was the interactive Q&A session with our Kidney Coach, where residents asked questions about kidney health, diet, medication use, and overall wellness. Having a trusted expert address their concerns made a significant impact, giving them the knowledge and confidence to make healthier choices.

Beyond Health: Supporting the Community with Food Ai

At Atim Ekanem Foundation, we recognize that good nutrition plays a vital role in kidney health. Many people in rural communities struggle with access to nutritious food, which can further contribute to chronic illnesses and kidney problems.

To support and encourage

those who attended the outreach, we distributed food items to community members. This small gesture was greatly appreciated, as it not only provided immediate relief but also reinforced our commitment to holistic well-being.

Looking Ahead: More Lives to Impact

Our outreach in Nung Ukim Ikono is just the beginning. We have many more communities to reach in Akwa Ibom State and beyond, and we are committed to expanding our efforts to ensure that more people have access to life-saving kidney health education and preventive care.

We are deeply grateful to our volunteers, donors, and supporters who make these initiatives possible. Your contributions are helping us transform lives, one community at a time.

Together, we can prevent kidney disease and create healthier futures for all.
